Juno Awards ’09

I can’t remember the last time I watched a music awards ceremony, but the JUNO Awards made for some nice background while reading. I was pleased to see that some of the musicians I like were honored by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS). Among those recognized were Buffy Sainte-Marie (Aboriginal Album), Oliver Jones (Traditional Jazz), James Ehnes (Classical Solo or Chamber Ensemble), and the Montréal Symphony Orchestra and Kent Nagano (Classical Large Ensemble), all of whom I previously mentioned with sound samples.

Loverboy was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, joining artists such as Joni Mitchell, k.d. lang, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. Although Loverboy has been rocking out for 30 years, they’re one of those bands I’ve heard without knowing it. While a couple of their songs were playing it was “Oh, that’s who does that!”.

Loverboy, “Turn Me Loose”:

Barenaked Ladies received an award for their children’s album, Snacktime. They’re a lot of fun and I occasionally find one of their songs stuck in my head. The full list of recipients may be viewed at the JUNO Awards website.
