Pegasus Brainstorm

The Pegasus Awards were founded by the Ohio Valley Filk Fest (OVFF) to honor excellence in filking. With nominations currently being accepted, I’m trying to think of which filk musicians and songs should be recognized. All of them is out of the question. The problem is, there is a ton of fantastic sci-fi/fantasy music out in the world. I only know a small handful, some of which I previously plugged in my “Filk 101” and “Got Filk?” posts. Another difficulty are some of the criteria, which make it fair but means some brainstorming is necessary. So, this is my scratch paper…

There are six categories, including two that change each year.

Best Filk Song: That has not previously won or been on this category’s final ballot in both of the previous two years.

SJ Tucker: Casimira, November
Vixy & Tony: Mal’s Song
Tom Smith: I’m on Firefly, Callisto, Five Years

Best Classic Filk Song: That is at least 10 years old and has not previously won or been on the final ballot in this category in both of the previous two years.

Mercedes Lackey & Leslie Fish: Threes
Kathy Mar: What was that title?
Alexander James Adams: Brannigan’s Special Ale

Best Writer/Composer: Who has not won in this category in the past 5 years.

Alexander James Adams
Michelle Dockrey
SJ Tucker
Barry Childs-Helton
Cat Faber: Hearing a song she wrote in about 10 minutes… *whistles*

Best Performer: Who has not won in this category in the past 5 years.

Alexander James Adams
SJ Tucker
Wild Mercy
Michael “Moonwulf” Longcor

A Little Bit Country: That is in the country style and may, or may not, be country themed.

Michael Longcor who, as Tom Smith pointed out, may be the only one for this category. I can’t think of anyone else.

A Little Bit Rock ‘n Roll: What songs do you think would go well with a full Rock ‘n Roll treatment?

Vixy & Tony: Six String Love
Alexander James Adams: Rock ‘N’ Gold (“and we’ll dance on top of heavy metal!”)

Me thinks I need more filk in my life. A good start would be Bob Kanefsky, who parodies songs and has the original musicians perform them. It’s a hoot. Plus I’ve been meaning to get more familiar with the music of Seanan McGuire, Ookla the Mok, Cat Faber, and……

Seanan McGuire, “Take Advantage of Me”

Ookla the Mok, “Super Powers”

Cat Faber & Michelle Dockrey’s “Into the Fire”
